Mission & Philosophy: All students will be physically and mentally challenged through a variety of vigorous activities in a planned sequential program.The Portland physical education program emphasizes physical activity that develops students physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally.
Physical education provides opportunities to discover interests and develop physical skills through exploration and participation. Students will have knowledge of many activities and understand the benefits of physical fitness. The program creates a positive atmosphere conducive to learning and developing self-esteem.
Curriculum: physical fitness training, weight training, gatorball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, aerobics, softball, tennis, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, cricket, soccer, lacrosse, floor hockey, California kickball, wiffleball, pickleball, golf, archery, table tennis, walking fit, adventure ed., cooperative games, tag games, jai-alai, orienteering, eclipse ball
Objectives: The physical education program should be considered a vital part of the total curriculum. Its objectives are in harmony with the ultimate objectives of general education, which is, helping ensure continuous growth of the individual pupil toward physical and social maturity.
Content: Individual sports: basic skills, general safety and conditioning, rules, scoring, strategy, tournament games, and evaluation.Team sports: basic skills, general safety and conditioning, scoring, team play and positioning, game strategy, offense and defense techniques, and evaluation.
