Happy Friday!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Our country is in the midst of a mental health crisis. Our young people are exposed to school violence, social media pressures and we continue to see an increase in anxiety and depression.
It is important that we as adults are aware of what affects our children. Smartphones and social media are an enormous culprit to tanking the mental health of our young people and adults alike.
There are signs we can look for in our young people if we are concerned about them. Change in sleep pattern, loss of appetite, choosing a different friend group, changes in mood or behavior. It is important to have open and age-appropriate conversations with our children. We need to let them know that all of their feelings are normal and being sad or scared is okay. They need a safe space to be able to tell adults how they feel.
We as parents have a difficult job, beyond just the normal parenting our own parents did. We are trying to navigate a world we did not grow up in and we have many forces working against us via social media. Keeping our children off social media as much as possible and as long as possible is important and building their self-esteem is crucial. It is a tough job but I know we can do it.
I can recommend two books that have been eye opening for me.
“Stolen Focus” by journalist Johan Hari
“The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt
Knowledge is power and understanding what we as parents are up against is half the battle.
If you have any concerns about your child’s mental health, please talk to your pediatrician for guidance.
Have a nice weekend.
