Wellness Week at Valley View: May 26–29

We are excited to announce that we will have a  Wellness Week May 26-29! Our students will be focusing on simple ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy and happy. Each day features a fun, low-key challenge to help us feel our best:
  • Tuesday: Tasty Tuesday T Our goal is hydration! We are challenging every student to finish one full water bottle before the school day ends.
  • Wednesday: Wellness Wednesday h We’re getting our hearts pumping! Classes will take quick "brain breaks" to do some exercise.
  • Thursday: Thoughtful Thursday i Wellness can be silly! We’ll be practicing "Laughing Yoga"—a fun way to reduce stress and boost our moods through intentional giggles.
  • Friday: Feel Good Friday  To celebrate a great week, the entire school will participate in a School-Wide Nature Walk at 2:00 PM. We’ll be soaking up some fresh air and enjoying the beauty around our school.
How can you help? Please ensure your child brings a refillable water bottle on Tuesday and wears comfortable shoes for our movement activities and Friday’s walk!

Alternate Bus Route Form 2026-2027 School Year

Dear Portland Parents/Guardians:

Each student in the Portland Public Schools is assigned a bus route based on the home address and school that the student is assigned. Parents and guardians are provided the option of selecting alternate pick-up and drop-off locations. If you do not need an alternate pick-up or drop-off location, you DO NOT need to complete the form. Due to the complex nature of creating bus routes, we ask that you complete this request for alternate bus routes by 5:00 pm on July 31st. This information will be shared with M&J Bus and used to create a.m. and p.m. bus routes for the 26-27 school year. Any requests for alternative bus routes after July 31 will not be honored until after the start of the school year. Once the school year gets underway, and we determine bus capacity, parents and guardians will have another opportunity to request alternative bus routes in mid-September.

*IMPORTANT - Please complete a separate form for each child.

Please direct questions about alternative bus route requests to your child's school:

Bus Information

Busing in the Portland Public Schools is provided by M&J Bus. Bus route lists are posted here: https://www.portlandctschools.org/transportation. The bus lists identify each stop's pick-up/drop-off time and location.

On a typical day, when all drivers are present and there are no abnormal road conditions, we expect that the routes will pick up and drop off students at times identified on the bus lists, give or take ten minutes.

If parents/guardians need real-time information about the whereabouts of a bus, please call M&J Bus at (860) 342-2217. The dispatcher at M&J Bus has real-time access via radio to all bus drivers.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

This weekend kicks off summer and we are already getting some beautiful warm weather. Please be sure to send your child with a water bottle as they play hard at recess and I see their red, sweaty faces as they return to their classrooms. Staying hydrated is very important for everyone and a good habit for our young people to start!

Parents ask me about sunscreen at this time of year. I have attached the policy below.  Please follow the policy and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I am a sunscreen pusher at my house so I understand if you want your child to have it for recess or outdoor activities.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend ahead. Get outside and away from screens and soak up some nature!

General Policies on Administration of Medication

Any student who is six years of age or older may possess and self-apply an over-the-counter sunscreen product while in school prior to engaging in any outdoor activity, with only a written authorization signed by the student's parent or guardian.

For students who are younger than six years of age all three of the following requirements pursuant to Section 10-212a-4 of the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies for self-administration of medication continue to apply:

1. an authorized prescriber provides a written medication order including the recommendation for self-administration;

2. a parent or guardian provides written authorization for self-administration of medications; and

3. the school nurse has assessed the student's competency for self-administration in the school setting and deemed it to be safe and appropriate.

Library News

We have been busy during library classes working on our final unit of the year- research projects! Students have been really enjoying the database Pebble Go. They can use it at home as well and they have been asking me to give them the password so here it is!  Go to www.pebblego.com and our username is ducks and password is read.  There are tons of interesting topics for students to explore!

Our final birthday book club for July/August birthdays or anyone who missed theirs this year was held on Wednesday. We received 17 gorgeous new books for the school library! Thank you to everyone who participated in the birthday book club this year. We received over 100 new books for our library and they are some of the students' favorites!

Valley View has 40 overdue library books so please bring those in as soon as possible! We only have a couple more weeks to check out books and get them all back before the school year ends. Our final check outs will be June 1st. After that we will be collecting all the books and no new check outs will occur. The first kindergarten and first grade class who brings in all of their books first will win a small prize. Thanks for taking great care of our library books!

Thank you for your support of the Valley View Library!

Art Room News

This week, Valley View students are learning to draw from observation, an important skill that teaches an artist to really see what they are drawing. Kindergarten students drew flowers while first graders drew insects. Everyone took their time and looked very closely at their objects as they worked. Look at these amazing results!
