Principal’s Message
Dear Portland Middle School Families,
What a great first week back at Portland Middle School!
Our 7th and 8th graders have done an outstanding job getting back into the rhythm of school while also adjusting to our brand-new daily schedule. Any change takes some getting used to, but our students have approached the week with positivity and flexibility. It has been great spending time in classrooms and hallways, checking in with students, and seeing how quickly they are adapting to their new normal.
One of the highlights of the week has simply been having our students back in the building. There has been a tremendous amount of positive energy throughout the school, and we are excited to build on this strong start in the weeks ahead.
A huge shout-out to our teachers and staff for the work they have done to welcome our students back! From establishing classroom routines and expectations to helping students navigate schedules, lockers, and everything else that comes with the beginning of a new school year, our staff has done an incredible job setting students up for a successful year.
Fall Sports Begin Monday!
Middle school fall sports officially get underway on Monday. We are excited to see our Highlanders back competing, working together, and representing Portland Middle School!
Families participating in fall athletics should continue to look for sport-specific information and updates regarding practices and schedules.
Open House — September 24
Please save the date for our Portland Middle School Open House on Thursday, September 24.
Additional information regarding the evening's schedule and format will be sent to families soon. We look forward to welcoming everyone into the building and giving families an opportunity to meet teachers and learn more about their child's school day.
Grit 'N Wit — September 30
Another exciting event on the horizon is our annual Grit 'N Wit event on Wednesday, September 30!
Grit 'N Wit provides students with a fun and challenging experience that combines physical obstacles, teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance. It is always a memorable day for our students, and we are looking forward to another great event this year.
More information will be shared with families as we get closer to the event.
Looking Ahead
Our first week was about establishing routines, building relationships, and helping students become comfortable with the new school year. As we move forward, our focus will continue to shift toward engaging instruction, meaningful learning, and helping every student find success.
Thank you to our families for your continued support and partnership. Most importantly, thank you to our students for bringing such great energy into the building this week.
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions. (860)342-1880, msearson@portlandct.us
Have a wonderful weekend!
