McKinney-Vento

McKinney-Vento

What is the McKinney-Vento Act?

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures all children and youth experiencing homelessness have access to a free, appropriate public education and can succeed in school.

Who qualifies for support under McKinney-Vento?

A variety of students may be eligible for support under McKinney-Vento. These include students who:

  • Are sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing or economic hardship ("doubled-up")

  • Live in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of adequate alternative accommodations

  • Live in emergency or transitional shelters

  • Live in cars, parks, public spaces, or abandoned buildings.

  • Are Unaccompanied Youth (not in the physical custody of a parent/guardian)

What should I do if I believe my family may qualify for McKinney-Vento, or if I have concerns about my family's housing status/needs?

Please direct all McKinney-Vento-related questions to Sara McLaughlin, Director of Student Services/McKinney-Vento Liason. She can be reached at (860) 342-2778 or via email at smclaughlin@portlandct.us
